Everything you need to know about the retirement of ITIL v3

Blog- ITILv3 Retirement

The deadline for completing the exams is 31st December 2021 , as of the 1st January 2022 there will no longer be ITIL v3 exams taking place.

ITIL v3 was released in 2006 and since then the world of IT has changed drastically. Therefore, in February 2019 it was announced that ITIL v3 would be retiring by 2022.

The new ITIL 4 will focus on addressing the emerging technologies and best practices that accompany digital transformation.

What does this mean for ITIL v3?

From the 1st July 2021 there will be no more ITIL v3 Foundation trainings and exams. This means that after the 1st July 2021 the entry point into ITIL Service management will be the ITIL 4 Foundation course and certification path. This is only applicable to those who are starting their ITIL journey for the first time.

If you If you have already taken the ITIL v3 Foundation course and wish to proceed with your ITIL journey you will need to attend an official ITIL 4 Foundation Bridge course. This course ensures that ITIL certified professionals can upgrade their skills without having to start from the beginning. As there are additions to the base version of the ITIL course there is no way to skip this step.

If you are close to having 17 credits from the ITIL v3 certification scheme you should look at completing your 17 credits by doing additional ITIL intermediate exams. The deadline for completing the exam is 31st December 2021, as of the 1st January 2022 there will no longer be ITIL v3 exams taking place. If you complete the 17 credits you will be able to attend the ITIL 4 Managing Professional Transition course. If you are not close to 17 credits it may be better to go directly to ITIL 4.

If you have completed 17 or more credits you need to take the ITIL 4 Managing Professional Transition course and pass the related exam before 1st July 2022. This will enable you to move efficiently into the new ITIL 4 certification path. In doing this, you will not have to attend all the advanced ITIL 4 Specialist and Strategist courses like Create, deliver and Support or Direct, Plan and Improve.

There is still plenty of time to prepare for the transition to ITIL 4. Take a look at the SureSkills website to see our full course listings and dates for the aforementioned ITIL 4 courses or contact us at info@sureskills.com to talk to a member of the Training & Certification team.
