Be Tomorrow Ready – review your disaster recovery procedures

Disaster recovery readiness requires that your organisation is proactive, that you plan ahead to determine what is needed to recover when a disaster strikes and that you review and check that you are able to implement this plan when disaster strikes.

We know that disasters can take many forms, from natural disasters such as earthquakes and floods to human made disasters such as errors or malicious actions.

Policies and procedures must be written before a disaster occurs to help the teams safely and efficiently recover. And you need to review and test these when regularly. Your policies and procedures need to take the following into account:

• Do you have all the information you need to contact team members at the disaster location?
• Do you have a clear understanding of the physical assets, including everything from the building to the hardware, that may be affected when a disaster occurs?
• Is there a documented procedure for ensuring that mission-critical applications can function by running them in a different location?
• Have you stored a backup of critical data in a second secure location to ensure that you do not lose data that is required to run your business?
